Namamahay//Home(ing) is a flash curatorial residency with BAP's inaugural curator in resident, Dayang  Yraola. Eight artists from Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, and Philippines are invited to hold residence in Las Casas de Acuzar de Filipinas in Bagac, Bataan from July 24 to August 4, 2018. Within these 12 days, each artist will build a project, which may either be an activity (workshop, open studio, performance) or object/ installation created site-specific to Las Casas, particularly in collaboration with the Las Casas workshops. In the duration of the residency, studios/work sites are open to the public. The last day will culminate into a collective performance and public presentation day. Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4.

Dayang Yraola

“Namamahay is a common concept among the Tagalogs. From the root-word, bahay, or home and the prefix nama- which signifies unreal feeling. Namamahay is usually associated with feeling of unease or even discomfort in doing domestic/personal activities, like not being able to sleep well.

Namamahay could also simply mean a process of trying to adjust to a transient space or a new home. Viewing it from a positive perspective, it signals that one is in a new situation, a new beginning, where new possibilities may arise. It is in this sense that I would like to take Namamahay; and I am coining a compound word—home(ing), to serve as its English translation.

In line with my previous curatorial work, Project Glocal and Composite Series, I continue to explore different conditions and situations in which artists can produce work. I continue to propose that the limitation of art production lies not on what the artists do not have, but their ability to manage or recognise their agencies.”

Dayang Yraola is a curator based in Manila and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Philippine Studies majoring in Literature and Art Studies and Masters in Museum Studies from the University of the Philippines. She is a PhD Candidate in Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. Dayang is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and College of Music. Dayang’s curatorial focus is on process-based art projects, which took off from an earlier platforms she spearheaded, called Project Glocal (2011-2015), and Composite Series (2015-2018), involving artists from parts of Southeast Asia and East Asia.

Mars Bugaoan

Mars Bugaoan is an interdisciplinary artist. He received his BFA with Latin Honor at the University of Santo Tomas in 2009. His works range from drawings, prints, mixed media, sculpture and installations.

 

Suzy Sulaiman &Teja Sofea

Suzy Sulaiman is a Kuala Lumpur-based artist, designer, educator and festival producer for Digital Art+ Culture Festival. Teja Sofea is an avid writer and maker.

Cheuk Wing Nam

Cheuk Wing Nam  completed several degrees including Master Degree of Visual Arts (Studio Art and Extended Media) in Hong Kong Baptist University. Coming from an multidisciplinary background, she has an active new media and sound practice.

Derek Tumala

Derek Tumala is a trans-disciplinary artist working in the intersection of art and science, technology, futurism & nightlife. He received his BFA with distinctions at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila in 2006.

Katti Sta. Ana

Katti Sta. Anna received her BFA at the University of the Philippines in 1991. She has been a painter, children's book illustrator, and mixed media artist; now a ceramicist and community artist. Her recent works engage audiences and participants to reflect on their humanity and the natural world.

Tetsuya Umeda is a sound and visual artist based in Osaka, Japan

Fairuz Sulaiman

Fairuz Sulaiman is a multi-tasking inter-disciplinary practice covers extensive ground. He is the Programme Director of Digital Art + Culture (DA+C) Festival in Penang.

Mulino by Cheuk Wing Nam

Wing’s project is a hand cranked windmill which she designed with the carpenter from Las Casas.  Her original workplan was to be exhibited by the beach, which had to be revised because of the weather. In view of this experience, Wing thought of bringing something from Hong Kong. She said, in Hong Kong, a similar device as her Mulino is used to pray that everything will be smooth. She hopes people will crank the Mulino, so everything will turn out ok for the Philippines.

You may… by Suzy Sulaiman and Teja Sofea

Suzy and Teja made mosaic plates with the tile mosaic artisans.  The design of the plates are inspired by the character of Casa Lubao and what appears to be the aspiration of the time the house was built or used. Other pieces were designed by the artisans themselves. These plates will be exhibited, with the documentation of the production and the performance “dinner party”.

This is a “tour performance” about “interpretation”. As the world weaves words to make history, some mangoes get entangled to it, connecting the limited spaces and making manifest transient moments.  

The title is inspired by paintings of woman with mango, which were found in different houses in Las Casas.

Angle of Incidence by Derek Tumala

This work is a live audio-visual performance. The artist made a visual and sound collage from what he gathered in Las Casas from day one of the residency.  This AV presentation collaged with live digital manipulation is Derek’s way of trying to capture other possible ways of viewing heritage site and its environment.

Casa Biñan: Reimagined by Fairuz Sulaiman

Culminating activity of the “(A) building (of) stories” workshop. This is a 30min presentation of retelling  the stories of Casa Biñan from the workshop attendee’s perspective. This presentation will incorporate a variety of medium; from puppetry to live video.

153KM Away by Mars Bugaoan

Mars created an assemblage from fiber glass trimmings from Las Casas mosaic workshop. The work relied on the irregular shape and colors of the trimmings, as the only intervention is chaining pieces together. A video documentation of the meandering of this work within Las Casas during the residency will also be on display.

Pamamahay by Katti Sta. Anna

As part of Katti’s advocacy for responsible engagement with environment, in this work, she represented endangered bats (Philippine Giant Fruit Bat or Golden Crowned Flying Fox) and local flora (tangisang-bayawak tree/ type of balete tree). Paniki is made out of soldered scrap metal. Tangisan-Bayawak will be planted inside the sculpture. This was done to emphasize the symbiotic relationship of these two—paniki feeds on figs of tangisan-bayawak.
