We're inviting you to BAP Talk: David Teh, on 12 September, 2PM, at UP Vargas Museum.

David Teh’s talk will focus on contemporary art in Thailand, drawing on his recent publications “Thai Art: Currencies of the Contemporary” (MIT Press, 2017) and “Artist-to-Artist: Independent Art Festivals in Chiang Mai 1992-98” (other authors include Patrick Flores and May Adadol Ingawanji, Uthit Athimana, Rosalind C. Morris, Thasnai Sethaseree. Koenig Books, 2018). In the first book, Teh offered a focused account of the ‘currencies’ artists have acquired in their engagements with the global art system, arguing that national context is necessary but not sufficient for a historical reckoning with the contemporary. The second, edited volume explores the emergence of that contemporaneity in a series of festivals held in Thailand's north known as the Chiang Mai Social Installation. The festivals were part of a regional constellation of artists’ initiatives and independent spaces, which shared their ethos of localism, friendship, and engagement with everyday life. Teh will situate the books in the context of a recent surge in the currency of Art History itself. This talk will be moderated by Patrick Flores.
