Print Making Workshop at Casa Quiapo!
On January 6th, BAP hosted a printmaking workshop at Casa Quiapo, Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar with the participation of Las Casas craftsmen. The workshop aimed to further deepen their knowledge to different kinds of art form as well as to empower their artistic practices.
Las Casas craftsmen with Mars Bugaoan
In partnership with the Association of Pinoy Printmakers, the workshop was facilitated by artists Mars Bugaoan, Junjun Sta. Ana, and Anton Villaruel. Specifically, artist Mars Bugaoan, a participant of Dayang Yraola’s curatorial flash residency, returned to his NAMAMAHAY project in which he repurposed discarded resin from the mosaic workshop to create his installation 153km Away (2018). Mars revisited the discarded resin strips as an alternative to linocut print technique, wherein a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface.
The workshop, which included 46 craftsmen participants, executed monotype and relief printmaking. In monotype printing, craftsmen draw on a surface and transfer the image unto the surface of found objects; whereas relief printing uses raised images from discarded resin from the mosaic workshops. Along with these techniques, facilitators gave a brief history of printmaking and how it ties in with the craftsmen’s work including carving, drawing, and painting to printmaking. The resulting prints were very personal as the participants created images of their dream houses, some about their children, and their favorite food and activity.
This is one of a series of workshops that will activate Casa Quiapo as a workshop and seminar space for arts, harkening back to its historical roots as the first fine arts school in the Philippines.
An exhibition of these prints is currently installed at Casa Quiapo, Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar and is open daily (8AM - 6PM) to the public for viewing.
