About the exhibition
This is the first major presentation of the iconic American artist Bruce Conner (1933–2008) in Southeast Asia.
The exhibition, curated by Artistic Director Diana Campbell Betancourt, will connect across Conner’s diverse practice, including his groundbreaking films and works of several of his aliases that draw out strands of Eastern and Western spirituality.
This will be a two-part exhibition taking place at Bellas Artes Projects’ Manila Outpost and its headquarters in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, Bataan.
The visit to our campus in Bataan will include a tour of Swiss artist Not Vital’s chapel, and previous residency projects with Pawel Althamer, Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan, and Cian Dayrit.
MABUHAY GARDENS PUNK PARTY
The Mabuhay Gardens Punk Party will take place after the showing of CROSSROADS (1967). The concert will feature headliners Hilera and Sandwich at Casa Binan at 10pm.
This concert is inspired by the 1970s cultural revolution and angst-driven energy that Bruce Conner captured.
Conner photographed punk rock shows at the legendary Mabuhay Gardens, a Filipino supper club in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, slowly becoming a key figure of the chaotic seventies punk scene. The infamous club hosted a list of notorious Punk bands including Devo, Negative Trend, The Mutants, Crime, UXA and the Avengers.
